In September of 1999 apartment buildings were blown up in three cities by terrorists — twice in Moscow and once each in Buinaksk and Volgodonsk. These attacks killed 307 people. At 9:45 pm on September 4th in the Dagestan military city of Buinaksk: a five-story apartment building on Shikhsaidov Street was blown up. Living there were officers and their families from 136th Brigade. The building was completely destroyed. At midnight on September 9-10th: an explosion destroyed a apartment building on Guryanov street in Moscow. On September 13th, an apartment building along the Kashirskoe highway in Moscow was destroyed. On September 16th, a truck packed with explosives equivalent to one and a half tons of TNT was detonated in the city of Volgodonsk. According to the degree of destruction, this terror act along the Oktyabrskoe highway is still considered the largest terrorist attack in Russia. Damaged in the explosion were 42 apartment buildings and 15 community facilities, including a police station, two schools, a kindergarten, and a library. More than 16 thousand people (including more than one thousand children), all told — about 8% of the city population, were officially recognized as victims. Hundreds of people suddenly found themselves homeless, without their property or health, 19 Volgodonsk residents were killed, and 73 permanently disabled. On the 10th anniversary of the destruction of Guryanov number 19 in Moscow, reporters from 'New Times' spent the entire day on the scene. Details were published in an article titled: “The epicenter of the pain”. Be first to comment this article | Views: 4470 | E-mail |

Фото Индиры Кодзасовой School № 1, where seven years ago a tragedy took place, has now been converted into a museum. But life takes its own course… Children born at the time of the attack, or soon afterward, will be going to school this year. All their young lives they have been accompanied by stories of the tragedy. Just like Andrei Turkin Natalia Tsaloeva was having a hard time with the pregnancy of her third daughter, and two weeks before term the doctors decided to induce labor, otherwise mother and child might have had complications. This was on August 15th, 2004. Now Madina is 7, and every day the whole family thanks her for causing her mother to stay home during those bloody September days. Her older sister Anna and cousins Ira, Vera, Boris, and their mother Aunt Nadezhda went to school, however… Comments (1) | Views: 5316 | E-mail |

On May 28th, 2010, the House of Journalists in the capital hosted a discussion of the topic: “What do we know about Anna Politkovskaya?” The International League of Young Journalists organized the discussion with the support of the Union of Russian Journalists. It turns out that we know very little, and we do not have a desire, and are unlikely ever to have a desire, to explore her works. The meeting, however, was able to discuss whether journalists were able to change the nation. Twelve people came to hear about Anna, and they learned about her from people who knew her: ‘Novaya Gazeta’ staff commentator Vyacheslav Izmailov, ‘Novaya Gazeta’ deputy editor Vitaly Yaroshevsky, and Vitaly Chelyshev, deputy editor of ‘Journalist’ magazine. I accidentally came across this article by Grigory Zaslavsky, published on March 14th, 2011. You may read it in full on the website of RIA 'Novosti', but I only wish to quote a fragment. Grigory Zaslavsky. The place where last year there was ‘A Miracle’ I heard it in the subway: the musical ‘An Ordinary Miracle’ was closing for the season, playing only until March 27th, and here I was still getting around to going to the premiere. I kept getting around to it, but never got to it, even though I knew that it was put on by Ivan Popovski, a student of Peter Fomenko, famous for his plays that are put on stage at his teacher’s ‘Workshop’ and at the Theater on Kamburova. Oleg Glushkov was choreographer, and he was also famous for setting to dance Valery Todorovski’s movie ‘Hipsters’. He also had performances at the Strastny theater center in Moscow, as well as at the School of Dramatic Art. Now he and Mark Zakharov were finishing work on ‘Peer Gynt’ at the Lenkom — this premiere is scheduled for the end of March. Among those performing were to be Irina Lindt, Yuri Mazihin, and, by the way, many of those who worked on ‘Nord-Ost’. And that is what this is all about. On August 24th, 2004, two airliners left Moscow's Domodedovo airport. A Tu-154 assumed a course towards Sochi, while a Tu-134 headed towards Volgograd, but neither would ever arrive at their destination. Almost simultaneously, terrorists blew up both ‘iron birds’: the Tu-154 while flying over the Rostov region, and the Tu-134 over the Tula region. All 88 passengers on board both aircraft were killed. That terrible day will forever remain in the memory of many residents of Volgograd, since on one of the ill-fated aircraft were children, parents, and friends of the residents of that heroic city of WW II fame. Meanwhile, the loved ones of these terrorism victims are still unable achieve punishment of the indirect culprits of this 'heavenly catastrophe'. Comments (1) | Views: 4718 | E-mail |
