Lawyers for the family of Anna Politkovskaya are seeking the interrogation of Ramzan Kadyrov as a witness in the murder case. Karina Moskalenko, who represents the family of the 'Novaya Gazeta' journalist, today in Moscow district military court noted that the name of the Chechen president has been repeatedly heard in the case file and witness testimony. «His questioning is important,» said the lawyer, adding that investigators never bothered to interrogate him. Anna Politkovskaya was gunned down on October 7th, 2006, in the entrance of the building where she lived on Lesnaya Ulitsa. Immediately after the crime, the president of Chechnya urged journalists not to look for 'a Chechen connection'. Shortly thereafter, however, Chechen natives Rustam and Ibrahim Makhmudov, and Magomed Demelkhanov, were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the crime. Also arrested in the case were the former head of the Achkhoi-Martan district in Chechnya, Shamil Burayev, and his friend, FSB Lieutenant Colonel Pavel Ryaguzov, according to ITAR-TASS. The charges against Burayev were later dropped, and the Demelkhanov brothers were released. Dmitry Grachev, who had been held in the case, was also released from custody.
