A catastrophe according to standards
Вторник, 01 Декабрь 2009
$titlealt_valThe railway catastrophe, which claimed three dozen lives, clearly demonstrates that our country is not ready for emergency situations. Assistance arrived on the scene some two hours after the accident, and ambulances did not arrive for three hours. Passengers and train workers were left to themselves. 'Fontanka' finds out what the leaders of the railways have concluded.
What says it all is the fact that there could have been a lot fewer victims if people had been helped in a timely fashion, if there had been enough medical supplies, and if the cars had been designed differently. People were not affected by the explosion itself, but as a result of the train derailing. It is clear that providing all hospitals in the Tver and Novgorod regions with medicines, or repairing roads so that ambulances can quickly get to the scene, are insolvable problems, at least in the short term. Yet it seems that no one is going to reduce other risk factors.

On the 'Nord-Ost' case being examined in the European Court
Вторник, 27 Октябрь 2009
1From an interview with Karinna Moskalenko:
«…We asked about Nord-Ost. We have several applicants who are simply afraid that they won't ever live to see a decision in this case. And so we raised the question: When? And then suddenly we received the answer that it would be considered at one of the upcoming meetings. What's interesting is that this will be all at once. The European Court has started doing this rather frequently. I just didn't expect that, in this case, they would consider both the case and questions on its admissibility and merits. I.e.: This will seriously reduce the time it takes to examine the case.»

Life After 'Nord-Ost'
Понедельник, 26 Октябрь 2009

Наталья Пелевина, Наталья Курбатова и Кристиан ОКоннорRelatives of those killed at Dubrovka still try to live on and find out the truth about the tragedy

Christian Arseny O'Connor was born eight months ago in Florida, and as yet does not know that he and his name are part of a tragic event in Russian history, when terrorists seized the theater on Dubrovka in October of 2002. Christian is the nephew of Kristina Kurbatova, a 13-year-old actress in the musical 'Nord-Ost', who, along with Arseny Kurylenko, perished from the gas used during the hostage rescue operation.

Kristina and Arseny were playing leading roles in the play, that of two youths, whose friendship promised to become a great and true love.

Krieger:
Вторник, 27 Октябрь 2009

there are no answers to the most important questions about 'Nord-Ost'

1Despite the fact that 7 years have passed since the terrorist attack on Dubrovka in Moscow, no one so far has responded to a number of important issues, chief of which is why was it necessary to perform an assault on the building, and in so doing cause many casualties as a result of the unknown gas. Also, why did the Special Forces kill all of the terrorists, even when they were in a state of unconsciousness? Mikhail Krieger, an activist from the ‘Union of Solidarity with Political Prisoners’, stated asked these questions.
The indifference of Russians towards investigating the 'Nord-Ost' case, according to Krieger, leads to no one being able to consider themselves immune from such situations, and so the government can «do whatever its wants to do with the people.»

The anniversary of the liberation of Dubrovka
Понедельник, 26 Октябрь 2009
1Last evening there was the premiere of a new musical in the Dubrovka theatrical center. Under a poster with the optimistic message of «I Choose Life», relatives of the victims were preparing to mourn the tragic events. It was still an hour before the start, when the first participant in the events arrived: Leonid Roshal. Standing silently before a plaque with the names of the victims of the terrorist attack, the doctor laid flowers, and, without saying a word, he walked away. Of those who 7 years ago sat in the headquarters and made the decisions, not a one appeared.
Tatyana Karpova, co-chairman of the Nord-Ost public organization: «We just wanted somebody, sometime or another during these 7 years, to have just looked us in the eye and explained what happened back then. Why did we lose so many people so stupidly, so ignorantly, and so carelessly?»
