Ruslan Koblev, the attorney defending a police major who is one of the leading figures in the so-called “werewolves in epaulets case” declared to Kommersant that officers of the Moscow detective department, who are suspected of numerous crimes as part of a criminal gang, also took part in the investigation of ‘Nord-Ost’, and “did not go where they needed to for the official investigation”. He promised that the accused themselves would give details about this in court.
Recall that on June 13th the attorney general declared that the investigation into the “werewolves in epaulets case” was complete and that the case had been referred to the court. Along with (Major) Alexander Yevstigneev in the case are Lieutenant Colonel Valery Demin and senior sergeants Yuri Kozar and Mikhail Kutyrin. According to investigators, together with the previously convicted chief of the emergencies ministry directorate of security, General Vladimir Ganeev, and six of his accomplices (including Valery Demin’s brother Nikolai), they formed a criminal gang that conducted extortion, illegal production and storage of weapons, explosives, and narcotics, as well as falsified testimony in criminal cases. Boris Gryzlov, who was interior minister at the time, initiated the “werewolves in epaulets case” in 2003. Koblev maintains that Gryzlov used the case “in order to become speaker of the parliament”. The attorney also insists that the evidence presented by the prosecutor is unconvincing, and intends to call for open hearings into the case, “so that the public can see how criminal cases are swept under the rug”.
