The website of the Kazakhstan Attorney General's office stated that, as a result of its counterpropaganda efforts, four persons intending to participate in the fighting (in Syria) were prevented from leaving Kazakhstan. This is according to a report by the news agency Novosti-Kazakhstan. “As a result pf counterpropaganda events, four persons intending to take part in hostilities were prevented from leaving Kazakhstan,” the report states. “The persons intended to join the Salafi and Tablighi Jamaat movements, and were put under temporary exit restrictions.” According to information portal YK-news.kz, none of the four men were related to each other, and all were acting independently. They were adherents of radical religious movements. Before going abroad, the men came under intense scrutiny by the Kazakhstan Security Service (KND). As a result of the KND’s operational activities, all four were detained. “They did not receive any criminal penalties, as they have abandoned their intentions,” stated Nurlan Bizhanov, deputy regional attorney general. “We used persuasion on them, and now they are under surveillance.” Last year the Attorney General's Office initiated no criminal investigations into the involvement of area residents in hostilities abroad.
