Several persons involved in the terrorist attacks in Atyrau, Kazakhstan, have been sentenced. According to ‘Interfax’, acting head of the district prosecutor’s office, Galymzhan Kulmanov, stated that five people were sentenced to terms ranging from 6 to 12 years, while another 42 were sentenced to terms ranging from 5 to 15 years confinement. The verdicts for the first five persons were reached in early April, but, as the trial itself was closed, this information is only now being made public. During the investigation it was found that the terrorist attacks involved a radical Islamist organization called ‘Jund al-Khalifa’ (‘Soldiers of the Caliphate’), which was a creation of Kazakhstan citizens. Earlier it was reported that the attacks in Atyrau (formerly known as the city of Guriev) occurred on October 31st, 2011. According to the Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan, the terrorists intended these bombings as a demonstration of the seriousness of their intent, but not to cause casualties. One of the bombs went off near a building housing the regional administration, and did not result in casualties. The second bomb was to be placed in front of the local prosecutor’s office, but exploded in route due to careless handling. All involved in the bombings were arrested in November of last year. During interrogation, they told that they were united by the idea of jihad, as promulgated by North Caucasus terrorist Buryatsky (real named Alexander Tikhomirov), who had been eliminated in Ingushetia in March of 2010. The organizers of ‘Jund al-Khalifa’, according to Kazakhstan investigators, are Rinat Habidolla, Urynbasar Munatov, and Damir Znaliyev. They are in hiding in the border area of Afghanistan and Pakistan, and participating in fighting for the Taliban. Lenta.ru Views: 4597 | E-mail
