Terrorism has no boundaries

At High School No. 1 in the city of Karaganda it has become traditional for students and parents to meet with security forces.  This time an officer from a department of the KNB (Kazakhstan Security Service) came to visit the upperclassmen. The theme of the open dialogue was issues concerning counter-terrorist operations.  Our city may seem to be far from the epicenters of terrorism, but recall the young Karaganda schoolgirl named Alexandra Letyago who was slain in Moscow at ‘Nord-Ost’, and Beslan where they killed a boy who took his first baby steps her in Karaganda.  One cannot remain indifferent to the human misery, which the terrorists sow; it is important to remember that any citizen of our nation could face manifestations of this evil.

The intelligence officer talked about the many faces of terrorism, and its impact. The kids were shown a video, which did not leave any of the participants at the meeting indifferent: explosions, blood, and death.  The mind refuses to accept that human beings could be behind all of this.

In the discussion about this evil topic, the schoolchildren concluded that Kazakhstan could have but one position on terrorism – to prevent the activities of extremist organizations.  Indeed, under our constitution, Kazakhstan is a secular state adhering to the principle of noninterference in the affairs of religion and, accordingly, the non-interference of religion in the governance. By the way, a recently-introduced school subject on religion was necessary so that high school students could distinguish true spiritual values from the destructive ideas of religious extremists.

Students at High School No. 1 became acquainted with the agenda for action while under the threat of a terrorist act, which was prepared by the provincial emergency situations directorate, and with materials from the KNB's counter-terrorism center concerning initial anti-terrorism training for the population.

Such meetings have been organized at the school for many years. It is worth noting that our high school students have not been seen at any anti-social manifestations for many years.
