Terrorists planned to blow up a police station and seize a military depot in Temirtau

ImageOn February 10th radical Islamists were convicted in the city of Karaganda. Dmitry Nikolaev and Adilet Temirkanov had planned terrorist attacks in Temirtau. As stated in the case file, they talked among themselves about what was needed to blow up the Eastern police division and attack a military depot located along the Almaty to Astana highway.

Dmitry Nikolaev was trained in Egypt at the Markaz extremist religious school. He learned Arabic, marksmanship, and the use of mines and explosives. At the end of January 2013, Nikolaev illegally crossed the Turkish-Syrian border and traveled to a camp for militants fighting against Syrian government forces, Once he was there, he joined the Zhamagata Abu Hanifa terrorist group. While in this organization, he met other immigrants from the Commonwealth of Independent States. Nikolaev became a spy, whose job it was to monitor the movement of government forces.

In September 2013, Nikolaev was sent to Kazakhstan. In Temirtau he found himself an accomplice — Kyrgyz citizen Adilet Temirkanov, who also had received special training as a radical Islamist. Together they recruited newcomers into their organization, which adhered to the ideals of radical Islam, training them in the production of explosives.

Nikolaev fully admitted his guilt in court, and recounted his plans in detail.

From the testimony of the defendant:

“Object for an attack were looked at: Firstly, the storage depot for military unit #555, which is along the Almaty-Astana highway on the outskirts of Temirtau, but only if a group of at least 50 experienced fighters could be brought together. The plan was to take out the four watchtowers using directed explosions, and to also put two covering groups along two roads to knock out a specific section of the highway in order to block the entrance to the warehouses. Next, after the explosion, the plan was to enter warehouses and gain access to various types of weapons.  So armed, an adjacent tank unit could be captured. After starting retreat, the plan was to head in the direction of Karaganda, where armed jihad would be conducted. Secondly, the Eastern police division in Temirtau was the most likely object for an attack, since it could be done alone. Suicide vests were also suggested, which would be worn upon entering the police building. If it were to prove impossible to conduct jihad in Kazakhstan, violent attacks on rich people could be carried, with one-third of the loot kept in order to prepare for jihad.”

In addition, Temirkanov and Nikolaev distributed videos online showing footage of “infidels” being executed.

A special inter-district criminal court in the Karaganda region convicted Nikolaev and Temirkanov terrorist activity.

Dmitry Nikolaev was sentenced to 11 years in prison, while his accomplice received eight.
