Three residents of the West Kazakhstan region were convicted for attempting to join the ISIS terrorist group, Tengrinews.kz reported, quoting the regional prosecutor's office press service.

The statement reads: «For this purpose, they studied radical religious literature urging jihad, production of a mobile detonator, as well as using the Internet to keep in contact with the people from the area who had taken part in terrorist activities in Syria. They discussed going through training for combat operations and the possibility of their arrival in the new future.»

The Border Guard Service detained the Kazakhs who attempted to join the ISIS militant group in November of last year, after the militants illegally crossing the border outside an established checkpoint. As a result of the verdict by the Ural city court, those who intended to join ISIS were convicted under articles of criminal law such as «Preparation of a crime and attempting a crime», «Participation in international armed conflict», and «Deliberate illegal crossing of the state border». Each was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months of imprisonment in a penal colony.
