Anna Politkovskaya and us. A control shot |

Page 9 of 9 I need to quote separately those who feel sorry for Politkovskaya and condemn her murder, but still believe, like President Putin, that she inflicted “harm”. When they kill a saint, after their death, they are beyond criticism. You cannot kill them, even if they lead the country toward an abyss. It is a sin to enjoy a person’s death… Let her lie down on the soft earth, and let her be fairly and compassionately rewarded for her thoughts and deeds. It is her legacy that scares me, though, just as I am afraid of the legacy of various other Sakharovs. See, and now Sakharov has been “stigmatized”. So that the reader does not fall into despair, here are other comments: WTF are you doing guys? What you are all discussing is — was it worth killing Politkovskaya or not? Think about it! I wonder how many of you will justify the murderer. Think about it, the state catches him and announces a referendum. You’ll see they’ll even award him ‘Hero of Russia’ after counting of votes. Are you people, or wolves? It’s a shame and very sad… It’s frightening to live in a country where some are killed and the others start to dance and spit on the corpse. Russia is still divided into those who’ve been in jail, and those who put them there. In the virtual sense, though there is a strong migratory trend from the first to the second. Perhaps I have Alzheimer’s, but in my opinion, even 10 years ago it was unthinkable to yell out loud such words about a slain journalist, whether you liked her work or not. What are you, my friends, absolutely f---ed up already? Fine, someone with meningitis goes yap, yap, but then a whole bunch starts yapping, hundreds if not thousands! No, boys, something in our country is f---ed up. I must state that these words in defense of Politkovskaya were drowned out and lost in the stream of misanthropy. But I must note that the vicious and aggressive are always in view and in earshot, they are active, and, in the first place, they themselves claim this everywhere. Secondly, again and again I am reminded of the results of sociological research that was performed in the Saratov region. On the question as to what job is the most dangerous in our country, the vast majority responded that the most dangerous job is to be an honest journalist. These people are far away, and there are more than those who rage and enjoy the murder of Anna Stepanovna Politkovskaya, the mother of two children. But the fact and extent of the public expression of such joy and hatred leads one to great concern for the moral and psychological state of our nation.
