Written by Анна Строганова
Понедельник, 24 Октябрь 2011
ImageIt has been 9 years since terrorists seized hostages in the Moscow theatrical center on Dubrovka. The Russian authorities are indifferent to the memory of the victims of terrorist attacks, says Svetlana Gubareva, a former hostage who lost in that terrorist attack her daughter and fiancé. On October 23rd, 2002, during the musical ‘Nord-Ost’, a group of Chechen rebels led by Movsar Barayev seized more than 900 people. The terrorists — 32 men and 18 women — held them hostage for three days. On October 26th, Russian commandos stormed the theatrical center and destroyed the terrorists. 130 hostages died as a result of the use of a secret gas. Former hostage Svetlana Gubareva, now a member of the coordinating council of of the ‘Nord-Ost’ regional public organization, lost her daughter and fiancé in the theatrical center on Dubrovka.

‘Nord-Ost’ — an unfinished play for one hundred and thirty people. It has been nine years since the tragedy at Dubrovka. Who had something to gain from the terrorist attack? Was it possible to avoid an assault? Why did the Russian authorities not let the terrorists release hostages? More questions than answers.

Musa Taipov, Anzor Maskhadov, Maxim Shevchenko, and Svetlana Gubareva on ‘Pulse of the Caucasus’ (Russian only)

ImageThe Russian Federal Security Service has released a draft of a decree by President Dmitry Medvedev on the order of establishing terrorist threat levels.

According to the published document, a “blue” (increased) level of terrorist threat is placed on an area or object where there is unconfirmed information about a real threat of a terrorist attack. Following the announcement of a “blue” level, special work must be done to verify information about a possible terrorist attack, and instructions are given to the law enforcement agencies. The subject of the possible terrorist attack receives increased patrols in public places, and there is an increase in checks of potential targets of terrorist attacks.
