Be first to comment this article | Views: 3543 | E-mail |

13 years ago, the world for us was divided in what was a peaceful life, and what happened after September 16th, 1999. All of Volgodonsk was shaken on that terrible morning. Everyone was in some way affected by this tragedy. Some lost loved ones and relatives, while others suddenly found themselves chronic patients at local hospitals. Children, like adults, overcame the effects of the terrorist attack and bravely faced the injections and exams of a host of physicians. No one really knew for sure what the aftereffects of the terrorist attack would be on the fragile psyche of the children — how young girls would mature after the severe trauma, or what they could expect when having children of their own. Unfortunately, despite the many efforts of the ‘Volga-Don’ regional public organization, the issue of rehabilitation for victims of the terrorist attack has not been resolved to this day. It has been eight years since the tragedy. ‘Mothers of Beslan’ committee chairman Susanna Dudiyeva talks about changes in the lives of the victims in the terrorist attack. What has changed? First of all, people have learned to live with their pain, their sorrow. I say this about myself and those close to me. The pain became not as unbearable as it was at first; it dulled to a certain extent. People started back to work and distracted themselves from deep thoughts. Some got married, had children. After a calamity some comfort finally comes — life does not stop and continues its course. It has big and small joys that we all experience as part of life. Among the victims of the Beslan terrorist attack there are some who are left all alone, but they find the strength in themselves to rejoice in the joys of others. What has been done over the past eight years by the community organization the 'Mothers of Beslan', which used to be called the ‘Committee of Mothers of Beslan’? Susanna Dudiyeva: I can say with a clear conscience: a lot. My great sorrow drove me to many good, decent, dignified people, with whom I have been with for eight years already, and together share our joys and sorrows, and together we fight for an objective investigation into the causes and consequences of the tragedy. We have learned a lot from each other. Be first to comment this article | Views: 7420 | E-mail |

Anna Stepanovna Politkovskaya — the author of the documentary book “A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya” and “The Second Chechen War” — was born August 30th, 1958, in New York City, where her parents were stationed in the diplomatic service. In 1980 she graduated from the College of Journalism at Moscow State University. After graduation she worked and was on the staff at various newspapers, such as ‘Izvestiya’, ‘Air Transport’, ‘Megapolis-Express’, as well as work for the publishers ‘Eskart’ and ‘Parity’. In 1999 she began work as a columnist at ‘Novaya Gazeta’. Starting in July of 1999, Anna made repeated trips into the war zones and refugee camps in Dagestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya. In December of that year, she organized the evacuation of 89 patients from a nursing home in war-torn Grozny, and through her efforts got them resettled in Russia. She was an active defender of human rights, assisting the mothers of dead soldiers in court, investigating corruption, and even participating in negotiations with the terrorists that had seized ‘Nord-Ost’.
