Today Russia marked a Day of Solidarity in the struggle against terrorism. This is the newest Memorial Day in Russia, which was established by a federal law titled “Days of Russian Military Glory”, dated June 6^th, 2005. It is connected with the tragic events in Beslan, when gunmen took hostage one of the city schools. As a result of the terror act in School #1 more than 300 persons, including more than 150 children, died.

Today, remembering the victims of Beslan, we are united in our intention to resist terrorism with all our might, and to never allow the spread of this criminal folly.

It is important to remember that one must not only fight terrorism, as to prevent its appearance. It is not just for the sake of beautiful speeches that we talk of the necessity of respecting cultural and religious peculiarities, and the right of all peoples populating the Russian Federation to retain their ethnic identities. Only through tolerance and mutual respect will it be possible to prevent the growth of terrorism’s social base, and deprive these criminals of any hope of support in society. This is the best prophylaxis against extremism.
