An appeal by Stary-Oskol medical students
Written by Ольга Есаулкова
Среда, 02 Сентябрь 2009
1The modern history of Russia contains so much grief, and so many misfortunes, that one can weep every day. People have become hardened, and do not allow regretful thoughts to long occupy them. They say: but no children were killed there. In Beslan there were children. At 'Nord-Ost' there also were children. And in Budyonnovsk. But few remember the dates of all these funeral events. They are superimposed on top of the other. One tragedy causes you to forget the rest. Most people are so tired, after all these years of terrorism, violence, and tragedies, that they either consciously or subconsciously drive away all such dark thoughts.
That is why the students at Stary-Oskol medical college for the third consecutive year will hold a Day of Solidarity in the fight against terrorism, and will light memorial candles and remember those who suffered and perished in terror attacks all over Russia.
On these days dry statistical data is embodied in specific names and faces of people. In September of 2008, Alexei Chernyx, a second-year student, appealed on behalf of the students of this college, for the youth in the Belgorod region to unite and stand together against terrorism and any act of violence, to show compassion for the victims of terrorist attacks and honor the memory of the slain.
On September 3, 2009, during the memorial ceremony, students from the college will appeal to the young people of Russia.
Let us recall a saying from Goethe: «He who does nothing for others, does nothing for himself.» The memory of the slain lives in the hearts of our students, and this means that they have inherent qualities such as benevolence, charity, and volunteerism, which indicate the spiritual maturity of youth.

Youth of Russia, the hope and future of our country!
We, the students of the Stary-Oskol Medical College, appeal to you to join together to confront terrorism.
There is no such thing as someone else's misfortune. Volgodonsk, Nord-Ost, Beslan, and tomorrow it could happen in your city, your village, or your school. Slain are those who were to make the Earth a blooming garden, to continue the human race, and to make scientific discoveries. Even if the explosions do not thunder over our heads, no one can be sure about tomorrow.
Tell your friends and acquaintances about terrorist attacks in Russia. Remember your peers, those who will never return to their homes, never again see the faces of their mothers and fathers, and never come to class. They were just like us: they loved to play, have fun, and were sometimes sad. None of them deserved such a fate. But it happened, so never again will they enjoy a sunny day, a starry sky, and the singing birds. They did not finish playing, singing, or loving.
Think about those who survived, those who endured being held hostage. The survivors will always remember the horror that they suffered. They received not only corporal, but also mental wounds, wounds that will ache until they draw their last breath.
As a sign of solidarity in the fight against terrorism, light a candle this evening and place it on a windowsill in your home. Let this little light serve as a tribute to the memory of the slain.
We appeal to you, our peers, to you, young citizens of Russia!
Remember your national pride! Say «NO!» to aggression in any form!
Remember:
There is no such thing as someone else's grief!
He who fears to confirm this,
Is likely either killing,
Or preparing to kill.
