A bombing in Gagry on Wednesday, the day of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's visit to Abkhazia, claimed the lives of two local residents: 25 year-old David Metreveli, and 52 year-old Lyudmila Surina. According to Ramin Gablaya, deputy minister of Internal Affairs of Abkhazia, an explosive device was hidden in a trash bin on Narta Street in front of the Gagry commercial firm YUTEKA, Inc. The blast occurred at 4:47 pm Moscow time. «The device went off as the cleaning woman Surina approached the trash bin, and while Metreveli, an employee of the local communications center, was passing nearby. It is a tragedy that these people received injuries incompatible with life,» said Gablaya. Members of the Samchenko family — husband, wife, and child — were also walking down the street, and injured as a result of the blast and shrapnel. The deputy minister said that they are currently in a Gagry district hospital, and that they are, fortunately, no longer in critical condition. Another four persons sought medical assistance at a hospital, but refused to be hospitalized. In connection with this occurrence, a headquarters was set up to investigate. It includes First Deputy Prosecutor General of Abkhazia, Beslan Kvitsinia, First Deputy Interior Minister Ramin Gablaya, the head of the Gagry city administration, Astamur Ketsba, as well as officers from the local security forces.
