Jury renders guilty verdict in the Cherkizovsky marketplace blast On April 30th a Moscow jury rendered a guilty verdict in the case of the August 2006 blast at Moscow’s Cherkizovsky market, reported ITAR-TASS referring to Moscow city court spokesman Anna Usachev. “The jurors in their verdict found the defendants guilty on all counts,” explained Usachev. “With regards to the explosion at the Cherkizovsky market, defendants Nikolai Korolyov, Sergey Klimuk, Oleg Kostyrev, and Valery Zhukavets were found guilty of committing a terrorist act, as well as killing 14 people and attempted to murder 61 people,” said the Moscow city court spokesman. The jury found no mitigating circumstances. The defendants were also charged with the illegal transport and manufacture of explosives and explosive devices, while Senyukov was found guilty of the premeditated murder of an Armenian student, Vigen Abramyants, which took place in Moscow’s Pushkinskaya metro station. Most of the accused are students of Moscow universities, and all of them belonged to the ‘Saved’ organization, which has never been registered. According to investigators, ‘Saved’ is a pseudo-patriotic, racist organization, and its members advocate ethnic intolerance. On August 21st a blast took place in the Cherkizovsky market, and suspects were detained on the spot. They turned out to Oleg Kostyrev, a student at the Mendeleev Technical Chemistry Institute, Ilya Tikhomirov, a student at the Moscow Sociology Institute, and Valery Zhukavets, a freshman at the Moscow Engineering Institute. During their first interrogation they said that they decided to do the bombing out of hatred towards Asians, and, moreover, they were members of some sort of a nationalist organization. As a result security forces went looking for cells of the ‘Saved’ military-patriotic club. The first to be arrested was the club’s chief, Nikolai Korolyov, followed by Sergei Klimuk, a coach of hand-to-hand fighting techniques. Views: 4186 | E-mail
