About 400 people expressed their sympathy and condolences to relatives of victims of the Beslan terror act

On

Bolotnaya Square

in Moscow there was a demonstration timed to coincide with the anniversary of the tragedy in Beslan — a report from the scene by a correspondent from Sobkor.ru.

About 400 people gathered to remember the victims of the terror act in Beslan and to express their sympathy and condolences. Present at the demonstration were relatives of the victims of this terror act, as well as from ‘Nord-Ost’ and the Volgodonsk apartment blasts.

There were representatives at the demonstration from the OGF (opposition parties) headed by Garry Kasparov, as well as national Bolsheviks. Representatives of movements such as ‘Defense’, ‘Change’, were also present, as was Nikita Belykh of the SPS party.

People held up signs at the demonstration reading: “Enough lies”, “Enough blood”, “Enough Putin”, “Beslan – we are with you”, and “We need the truth”. In addition, participants brought photos of every dead hostage and flowers and lit candles were placed in front of these.

In a speech by the representative of the Voice of Beslan organization, Svetlana Mardeeva began by thanking all present for coming to the demonstration. In her words, when they were inside the captive school she promised her daughter that they would be saved. “I deceived her,” added Mardeeva. She mentioned that she knows, as do other relatives of victims of the terror act, who gave the order to fire upon the school. However, according to her, none of the responsible officials has yet to be punished. “While we still live we will fight for the truth about Beslan,” Mardeeva concluded.

In turn, Tatiana Karpova, co-chairman of the ‘Nord-Ost’ public organization, said that she was ashamed the stand in front of the Beslan women, since the day before they had asked her how Moscow intended to mark the day of mourning for the tragedy in Beslan. Karpova told them that she contacted representatives of the mayor’s office who said that Moscow would celebrate City Day and asked her not to distract them from their preparations.

Representatives of the ‘Exploded Fates’ public organization could not attend the meeting, but they sent a message in their name. “That, which is the most dear to us, the right to a real family, was taken from us. Today we share your pain in order to somehow lessen your grief,” said the message.

According to Ella Kesayeva, co-chairman of the ‘Voice of Beslan’ organization, “the only thing that the victims in Beslan require is the truth”. In an interview with journalists she said that “while Putin is in power, the truth will never be determined and those who are really guilty for the tragedy will still be called heroes”. “We will struggle to ensure that this such tragedies are not repeated,” she said. In addition, Kesayeva appealed to the heads of the government and asked them not to block the investigation, and to alleviate the suffering of the people.

The author of the ‘Truth of Beslan’ report, Yuri Savelev, declared that as a member of the parliamentary commission, at first he sincerely believed the official version of the terror act, but after acquainting himself with documents and speaking with former hostages, he arrived at a completely different conclusion. On the basis of this he wrote his report. Savelev noted that the police, secret services, and military structures had an assignment to destroy the gunmen, not to save the hostages. Now, in Savelev’s opinion, the authorities are trying to forget the Beslan tragedy. He appealed to those in attendance and asked them not to remain indifferent to what is happening in the nation.

We note that a remembrance about the events in Beslan took place on the central Volgograd river embankment by members of the ‘New People’ youth organization. They held an evening vigil, called “Light a Memorial Candle”. On September 2nd the lit candles will be released on a wooden raft into the Volga.

On September 3rd at 1:05 pm (the time three years ago when the first explosion occurred in the school) there will be a minute of silence and relatives and loved ones of the dead will launch 334 white balloons into the sky. The bishop of Vladikavkaz and Stavropol, Bishop Theofan, at the memorial cemetery in Beslan will hold a requiem mass in honor of those who died. There are now 334 victims of the 2004 terror act in Beslan.
