Premier Ramzan Kadyrov is promising to obtain a review of the sentencing of Zara Murtazaliyeva, who was convicted of attempting to commit a terrorist attack in Moscow. Kadyrov said he did not believe the convicted woman is guilty, and will bring in “experienced jurists and attorneys.” According to him, Murtazaliyeva asked for his help in getting transferred to a prison in Chechnya so that she may serve out her sentence there, RIA Novosti reported. Kadyrov is going to help not only the convicted female terrorist, but also other imprisoned compatriots. The premier believes that many Chechens end up in jail on trumped-up charges after signing records of their interrogations without knowledge of the Russian language. Meanwhile, Murtazaliyeva’s attorney Vladimir Suvorov said in an interview with radio station ‘Ekho Moskvy’ that he knew nothing about the planned revision of his client’s sentence, but he hoped that the intervention by Chechen authorities would bring results. In January 2005, Murtazaliyeva was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment in a penal colony. She was convicted of preparing a terrorist attack, involving others in an act of terrorism, and the illegal purchase and possession of explosives. Murtazaliyeva was arrested on March 4th, 2004 near the hotel Kometa on Vernadsky Prospect. During a search of her purse, the explosive substance Plastit-4 was discovered. Murtazaliyeva was accused of possessing explosives, and later of preparing a terrorist attack. According to investigators, she was preparing to blow up an escalator in the Ohotny Ryad shopping complex by using 196 grams of Plastit-4. In addition, prosecutors argued that Murtazaliyeva carried out moral and psychological training of Darya Voronova and Anna Kulikova in order to make them commit terrorist acts. At her trial, Murtazaliyeva claimed that the explosives were planted on her when she went to wash their hands after being fingerprinted. In March 2005, the Supreme Court reduced Murtazaliyeva’s sentence to eight and a half years due to changes in the Russian criminal codex.
