In New York City a memorial was dedicated to the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks, according to Agence France-Presse. The opening of the memorial was part of a ceremony marking the tenth anniversary of the terror attacks.

The ceremony began with a moment of silence for the nearly three thousand who perished. The minute was timed to the moment when the first of the terrorist-captured airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center towers. In future ceremonies there will be five more observations of a minute of silence — to mark the moment when the second airliner struck the second tower, the time the third airliner crashed into the Pentagon, the time the fourth airliner crashed in Pennsylvania (the airplane crashed because passengers resisted the attackers), and the moments when each tower collapsed.

Taking part in the current commemorative events were Barack Obama and George W. Bush, who was serving as president in 2001. Both presidents were accompanied by their wives. Relatives of the victims of the terror attacks also came to the ceremony, many of them holding pictures of the dead.

During the ceremony the US flag was raised and the national anthem performed. Then came the opening of the memorial, which consists of two black square pools that reproduce the outlines of the foundations of the WTC towers. Into the pools pour streams of water.
September 11th ceremonies took place not only in the US, but also in many other countries. In Paris, French and American choirs alternately sang the US and French national anthems before an image of the destroyed towers. About two thousand people gathered for a memorial ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral in London. Taking part in that event were 67 British families who lost loved ones during terrorist attacks.
