Memorial rallies held in Beslan and Moscow for victims of the Beslan tragedy
On June 1st, International Children Day, the 'Mothers of Beslan' association of victims of terrorist attacks held a rally in the courtyard of Beslan School #1, which was the victim of a terrorist attack in September of 2004. The rally was titled «Protect the children».
At the rally in Beslan gathered victims, teachers, and students from other schools in Beslan, as well as people who were taken hostage during the siege. In total, the rally was attended by about 100 people. In their hands they held banners reading «Parents lose their children, the state — its future citizens.»
The rally was a critique of the government and the investigation into the events.
Zoya Dzutseva, in particular, stated: «For the seventh year neither the 'Mothers of Beslan' committee, nor 'Voice of Beslan' has been able to reach the offices of government officials in order to learn the truth as to why our children died, and who made it possible for the bandits to get into Beslan.»
She proposed the creation of a department to rehabilitate victims under the district or municipal administration, and mentioned cases of children affected by the tragedy suffering from deteriorating conditions.
A member of the 'Mothers of Beslan' organization, Anneta Gadiyeva, noted that the school where the tragedy occurred was «an indicator of how we protect childhood in this country.»
In Moscow today there was also a rally held, to lay flowers at the monument dedicated to the victims of the Beslan terrorist act. The ceremony, organized by the presidential mission of North Ossetia, was attended by public figures, State Duma deputies, and representatives of the intelligentsia.
From North Ossetia to participate in the ceremony came Susanna Dudiyeva and Elvira Tuayeva, committee members from the 'Mothers of Beslan', as well as a group of students from Beslan school № 1 headed by the chief of the 'Peace to Children of the Caucasus' project, Bella Tsgoyeva.
Susanna Dudiyeva and Elvira Tuayeva met with President Dmitry Medvedev. «During the hour and a half meeting, held in private with the President, activists were able to say everything that they had planned to say,» said Anneta Gadiyeva, a member of 'Mothers of Beslan'.
In particular, they discussed the course of the investigation into the terror attack, and the allocation of social assistance to victims. During the meeting, the President made proposals and recommendations to combat terrorism.
Recall that the monument to the victims of the Beslan school siege was opened in Moscow on June 1st, 2010, at the suggestion of government of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania. The idea was supported by the Moscow city government.
