More than 70% of Russians believe

More than 70% of Russians believe that the government is hiding the truth about the seizure of ‘Nord-Ost’

Image65% consider the situation in the Caucasus to be “tense”

Russians do not believe that the authorities have told the truth about the events that took place nine years ago in the theatrical center on Dubrovka.

According to a survey conducted by specialists from the Levada-Center, only 8% of the population believes that the authorities are telling the whole truth about the seizure of ‘Nord-Ost’.

43% believe that ordinary citizens have been told only some of the truth, 24% believe that the truth is being covered up, 4% declare that the government “is lying and distorting the facts”, and 21% found it difficult to answer this question.

In reply to the question: “What will the Russian authorities try to do if terrorists once again take hostages and require that Russia carries out their demands?” 49% of respondents said that the authorities would try to “avoid bloodshed at all costs, even if it means meeting the demands of terrorists”, while at the same time, 27% chose: “Eliminate the terrorists, even if it leads to a loss of life.”

It is interesting that when asked their personal opinion on what the authorities should do in case of a repetition of ‘Nord-Ost’, 74% of Russians believe that it is necessary to avoid bloodshed at all costs, even if it means meeting the demands of terrorists.

One in six (16%) is convinced that we should not kowtow to the terrorists in such cases — they must be destroyed, even if it leads to a loss of life.

Pollsters also asked Russians about how they now assess the situation in the North Caucasus. 65% called it “tense”, 10% “explosive”, and 16% “safe and secure”.

The tragic events in Dubrovka took place October 23–26, 2002. A group of armed militants seized the audience of the musical ‘Nord-Ost’ — in all, more than 900 hostages, 130 of which were killed and 700 injured.

The 40 terrorists who seized the theatrical center were destroyed.
