Moscow hosts a rally devoted to the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attack on 'Nord-Ost'

Митинг... Currently at the theatrical center on Dubrovka in Moscow a memorial service is being held, dedicated to the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attack that occurred on October 23rd, 2002, during the musical 'Nord-Ost'. As reported a correspondent from the REGNUM News Agency reports, not only have the relatives of those killed and the victims of 'Nord-Ost' gathered, but also those whose loved ones were slain in Volgodonsk, Beslan, the bombings on the Kashirsk Highway and on Guryanov Street in Moscow, the Avtozavodskaya subway station bombing in Moscow, and other terrorist acts that have occurred recently in the Russian Federation. In addition, representatives of the victims of the New York September 11th attacks and the London Underground bombings have come.
About 500 people are attending the rally, and people continue to come and lay flowers at the monument to the victims of the terrorist attack, as well as at a wall of the theatrical center where there is a memorial plaque and photos of all who were slain in the attack. Many relatives are holding pictures of dead, and lighted candles. Some who laid flowers have remained for the rally, while others have left.
The memorial rally is being attended by politicians and cultural figures, including the leader of the People's Democratic Union, Mikhail Kasyanov, the leader of the Yabloko party, Grigory Yavlinsky, Moscow City parliament member from the Yabloko party, Sergei Mitrokhin, and federal parliament member and People's Artist of the USSR, Josef Kobzon.

Speakers at the rally pointed out that terrorism was the greatest of evils, but a large amount of criticism was leveled at the Russian security services whose actions during the hostage rescue operation at 'Nord-Ost' resulted in the deaths of many of the loved ones of those present. The speakers also expressed such political slogans as: 'President Putin must answer in court for his actions', and 'A country whose soldiers kill its citizens cannot be great'.

The theatrical center has been cordoned off on all sides. In order to get to the rally people have to walk through a metal detector, and there is an ambulance on duty by the square. As a source told REGNUM that one man at the rally has been suffering from very poor health.

After the rally they will hold a requiem service for the victims of the terrorist attack, and into the sky will be released 130 white balloons, the number slain at 'Nord-Ost'.

Five years ago, on October 26th, a rescue operation was conducted to free hostages who had been seized by terrorists at Dubrovka on October 23rd. 912 people were held hostage. 40 terrorists were killed during the assault three days later. There were 130 hostages slain in the terror attack, many as a result of the gas used against the terrorists.
