Moscow police chief Vladimir Pronin officially announced that, on the evening of December 27th, an improvised explosive device went off on Manezh Square, according to the news agency 'Interfax'. «On Okhotny Row there was some kind of a homemade bomb consisting of several components, including nitrate, in a plastic covering,» said the chief of the Moscow police. Pronin, however, said that the blast was being treated as an act of vandalism, according to 'RIA Novosti'. «By the construction of the device and its application, the offender obviously did not want to cause injuries,» said the police chief. A source in the task force investigating the blast on Manezh Square said that a similar mixture was used for a bomb at the Cherkizovsky marketplace. According to him, in both cases the explosive charge was made out of a pyrotechnic mixture of magnesium, manganese, potassium nitrate, and a trioxide of acetone. The explosion on Manezh Square occurred at about 6 pm on December 27th. An explosive device with the power of up to 150 grams of TNT was placed at the entrance to the Okhotny Row shopping mall, which was then evacuated. As a result of the incident, several streetlights were damaged and a granite tile was chipped. Officially, no one was hurt. According to unofficial reports, however, five persons sought medical assistance for smoke inhalation. According to the original version, unknown hooligans had set off fireworks.
