In 2006 more than 300 terrorist acts in Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia, and the Stavropol region were prevented, Federal Security Service (FSB) director Nikolai Patrushev declared at a meeting of the National Anti-terrorism Committee (NAK). Patrushev, according to
“We were able to cut the ties between international terrorist organizations and the heads of rebel bands, and prevent the spread of terrorist hot spots and extremism in the North Caucasus,” Patrushev added. “Results of an analysis of incoming information bears witness to the fact that the size and frequency of terror acts is directed related to the amount of and intensity of terrorist financial and material aid.”
Patrushev stressed as well that the important activities of the NAK made timely declarations, uncovering and liquidating channels by which resources for illegal armed gangs arrive. Speaking about the amnesty in the North Caucasus, the FSB director emphasized that during this time 546 participants in underground gangs have laid down their weapons, writes CTPAHA.PY.
“Certainly, the creation of the National Anti-terrorism Committee has been proven effective,” declared parliament security committee head Pavel Shikurov. “Coordinating the activities of all armed forces structures and unifying command and control cannot help but be reflected in their work in countering terrorism.”
Patrushev has already presented data for 2006. At the time he even reported that, in cooperation with foreign intelligence services, five persons – four of them Russian citizens – have been convicted. He also reminded the press about “the great public uproar from the activity of agents of MI-6 British Intelligence,” four officers who were using diplomatic immunity to support conspiratorial ties with a number of Russian citizens. They had been using an “electronic vault” camouflaged as a rock. Patrushev also accused a non-governmental organization, the Danish Refugee Council, as trying to conduct spying in Chechnya. The FSB has more than once noted “couriers from Denmark” who have experience in intelligence work.
Recall that in October a similar accusation was made against the Danish Refugee Council by Uzbek authorities.
