Lenta.ru remembers famous people who died in 2006

October 7th, Anna Politkovskaya, journalist.

48 year-old Politkovskaya was famous as a journalist and human rights advocate who wrote material on Chechnya for ‘Novaya Gazeta’. In these, she accused the military of various crimes, including the murder of peaceful residents of Chechnya.

In 1999 she organized the transfer of 89 elderly people from a nursing home in Grozny that was besieged by federal forces. In 2002, when ‘Nord-Ost’ was seized, she was one of those with whom the head gunman, Movsar Barayev, agreed to speak. In 2004, on finding out about the capture of the school in Beslan, she quickly headed there, but was poisoned by tea in route. Back then she declared that she was poisoned under orders of the authorities who did not want her to be at the terror act.

Her articles often were often called prejudiced and biased, though when she was killed many recalled that she enjoyed large popularity in Russia and authority outside the country. Commenting on this murder, President Putin declared that it “had caused greater damage to Russia than Politkovskaya’s articles”.

There are many theories on who killed Politkovskaya, and why. They are mainly connected with her journalistic investigations of the events in Chechnya.
