Beslan remembers the slain Little Arseny is four. He was born just after the Beslan tragedy (PHOTO). His older sister died in the school gymnasium. Only because of her son was Svetlana Margiyeva able to survive the loss of her daughter, who died in her arms inside the captured school. Since that time, Svetlana comes to the Beslan city cemetery every morning. «If I could live here, I would. So that I could always be nearby,» said Svetlana Margiyeva on leaving the cemetery. The month of August was very eventful. First off, Russia carefully prepared for the Beijing Olympics, and then scrupulously counted every medal earned. Against this backdrop of general joy, everyone was too busy to remember the «black days» of August. The following list is filled with the days of «Operation Enforce Peace» August 1st, 2003: The Mozdok hospital building in North Ossetia is blown up. 50 killed, more than 60 injured. August 7th, 2008: Blast on the beach in the village of Loo in the Lazarevsky district of Sochi. 2 killed, dozens wounded.

On August 30th, our columnist Anna Politkovskaya would have turned 50. She lived a year less than her favorite poet, Marina Tsvetaeva, who once wrote in a letter to Boris Pasternak: “All of the lightning strikes you, but you must live.” All the lightning also struck Anya, and though she very much wanted to live, and you can feel this as soon as you read the recollections by her daughter Vera that are published here. No one could force Anya to betray Tsvetaeva’s Law: the Law of the Outstretched Hand. Living under this law, she was always there, where she was needed: near the hospital cot of a wounded captain, near the parents of a girl who had just been abducted and raped, near the hostages at the theatrical center…

April 3rd: Small stun grenade blows up in a park. 2 injured. April 7th: Local resident finds a purse on a park bench across from a movie theater, and gives it to a police officer. It blows up in officer's hands. 1 (the police officer) is seriously injured. June 11th: Local retiree finds a metal flask, which explodes when he opens it. No information on injuries. July 24th: Suspicious package with exposed wiring found at the Sochi art gallery. No injuries. July 31st: Cognac bottle found in the street by a young man explodes, killing him. 1 death. Today there was another explosion in Sochi: 2 dead and 7 injured. Police are offering 2 million rubles (ed: about $80,000) for information on the perpetrators.

On Monday, July 4, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at the presidium of the government said that the threat of new terrorist attacks in the country remains very serious. He also added that tens of billions of rubles would be allocated in order to implement state programs to combat terrorism. According to the newspaper Kommersant, the Federal «Antiterrorism» program was allocated 717.7 million rubles in the 2005 budget. The publication reported that, according to official figures, the open portion of the Federal «Anti-terror» Program was 105 million in 2005. In 2007, it was 85 million rubles. Very few people, however, are interested in the fate of the tens of thousands of who have been victims of terrorism in Russia.

Dozens of newspapers in Russia have reacted to Mr Trunov's declaration of so-called «secret proceedings that will examine lawsuits brought by the victims of the terror act at the Dubrovka theatrical center in Moscow». In reality, the government of Russia has petitioned to keep confidential documents in the 'Nord-Ost' case (the reason — terrorists could use this information in their terror attacks). However, Ms. Milichuk's letter discusses already submitted documents (I quote: «documents, which were deposited with the Registry in connection with the above application»). Premier at the Sakharov Museum of the film: «Anna Politkovskaya: Seven years on the frontline» On June 24th the Sakharov Museum held a premier of a Dutch film about the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya, according to a report by SOBKOR.RU The film, produced in 2008 by director Masha Novikova, is titled «Anna Politkovskaya: Seven years on the frontline».
